About this Portfolio:

The inspiration for this portfolio actually began three years prior to the time I met Mr. Perillo.

Having owned and operated a shop specializing in collectibles and limited editions, I was always on the alert for that special plate, figurine, doll or bell that would tantalize my collectors. One glance at photos of Perillo's work convinced me I was witness to the art of someone very special. I was deeply moved by his work, and placed my first order for plates in the beautiful Chieftan I series.

Three years later, in May of 1983, I made arrangements to host a show featuring Perillo's works. Mr. Perillo agreed to appear personally to sign plates, figurines and lithos. I will never forget the anticipation of the event. I, along with many other admirers, anxiously awaited his arrival. I went through the motions of a hostess - but always with one eye on the door anticipating his arrival.

When Mr. Perillo entered, the ballroom erupted into spontaneous applause. A smile that warmed the room greeted every guest. I watched him act and interact with people. I observed people reacting to this amazing talent and the awesome realization struck me that Perillo had not been born to paint solely for my appreciation.

A wonderful show behind us, we all began to wind down over dinner. No coaxing was necessary to learn of Greg's lovely wife Mary, daughter Annette, and son Stephen. He verbalized his pride in his family. having met Mary, Stephen and Annette, I recognized the basis for Perillo's success and positive approach to life. He is a man surrounded by a family that loves and encourages him. He immerses himself totally in his work. When he paints, it's as though no world exists beyond the walls of his home and stufio.

Perillo's popularity has placed great demands on his time. An adoring public nips affectionately at his heels, anxious for his signature and impulsive to express appreciation for the art that warms their hearts. As one of his most ardent admirers, I find myself fighting anxiety attacks when he is away from his easel so much. There should be two Gregory Perillos - one free to travel and greet Perillo fans, and the other free to paint from dawn to dusk.

Greg and I discussed the possibility of his painting and oil for me to illustrate a poem I had written. My husband was the first to verbalize the concept in reverse. Why not write poetry inspired by Perillo's painting - and so the idea for this portfolio with poetry was born.

Greg determined at the onset of this project that the contents should consist mainly of art that had not been previously published. I agreed that for the most part art thirsty collectors wanted more of perillo. However, as we coordinated the contents of the portfolio, we decided that several heretofore published works of art should not be deleted from this project.

As I began to write, I realized how totally dependent I was on the art for inspiration. When I attempted to write a poem about a Perillo painting from memory or from a title of a painting, the mental blocks came upon me on all four sides. When I studied pictures of his paintings, however, the words would begin once more to flow.

Interpretation of art is a very personal and diversified thought process. All is left to the imagination and speculation of the beholder. Because Perillo paints with such a realistic style, I get the impression that more people see "the same thing" in his art than artists who tend toward abstract and impressionistic painting for example.

I hope you will study the paintings and read the poems. If the art says something totally different to you then the poetry, that's fine. These poems are the windows of my soul and reflect what I see.

This project has been a labor of love, a search for truth and more. It monopolized most of my thoughts, conscious and subconscious, for months. As I reflected on these paintings, I heard the laughter and cries of the Indian. Some paintings portray a message so vivid that at times I felt a personal responsibility to what happened to the only Native Americans in our beautiful country. Some paintings made me smile and others challenged me to strive for a courage and inner strength that I didn't seek before observing the results of a wad of camel hair dipped into paint and choreographed on canvas by the master, Perillo.

Even on a clear day the sound of drums will fade into silence. The message from the Indian's heart is still heard today. Listen... see if you too, hear "heartbeats loiuder than drums."
